And Lets Go To Work ~ Coach Mo

And Lets Go To Work

Fall camp starts today!  Regardless of what has happened in the past ten days, we have a great football team and our boys will make us proud this fall, even if the administration doesn't.  The staff and the team are moving forward and I can't wait for the camp reports to start rolling in.  Are you ready?  BRACE YOUR BACK FOOT AND COME OUT OF IT.  ONLY WAY I KNOW HOW TO DO IT!
Love that guy!  Coach Mo is the muther truckin' man!

There are a few football related things.
  • Gio Bernard has been cleared for full contact.
  • Hunter Furr is transferring.  Hunter Furr was going to transfer this semester unless he was number one on the depth chart.  Never going to happen, so he is going to try to find a place where it can.  Good luck to him.  As a result, AJ Blue is probably moving back to the position he was recruited to play - running back.  We will know more about the depth chart soon, but with Rhyno limited to no contact and Gio the only non-freshman running back, I can't see how Blue isn't moved back.
  • Nate Dorch drops us for the 'Canes.  This is sucks, but it is not much of a surprise.  Miami was Dorch's childhood favorite and, like what has happened so many times in the past 18 months, Miami began recruiting Dorch after we offered.  Once the 'Canes began showing interest, it was unlikely that Dorch was coming to Chapel Hill.  His decommitment is not related to Coach Davis's removal.
  • Brandon Willis is transferring.  This will be his fourth transfer since he started college and his third in eighteen months.
  • Mywan Jackson has return home to Florida for personal reasons and is expected to transfer to a school closer to home.
  • Ryan Houston and Brandon Ellerbe not present for team picture.  Withers has said that Houston will be at afternoon practice.  Brandon Ellerbe is still working to be cleared by the NCAA.
  • Congratulations to Mark House, Curtis Byrd, and Trace Jones for earning a scholarship!
I was thinking about a rallying cry for the football team for the year.  There is no doubt it should be an us against the world mentality.  I initially thought of Biggie Small's Fuck the World, Don't Ask Me for Shit featuring Method Man, but I like this better:

I pay these niggas with a reality check
Prepare for the worst but still praying for the best
This game is a bitch I got my hand up her dress . . .

I'm not a star, somebody lied I got a chopper in the car
I got a chopper in the car
When I hear this song, I visualize Quinton Coples and Donte Paige-Moss letting the opposing quarterback know "I got a chopper in the car, HUH!"

Fire Holden Thorp

The incompetence that Holden Thorp has demonstrated in the past ten days is staggering!  Want Holden Thorp relieved of his duties?  Go to FireHoldenThorp.com and do something about it!

Basketball Recruiting Board

The Commits:

Marcus Paige
Marion (Iowa) Linn-Mar
6-1, 160, PG
Scout:  #1 PG; #27 Overall
ESPN: #1PG; #27 Overall

"One of the better pure point guards in the country, Paige is a coach out on the floor and has that winning quality to him that all great lead guards need to have. For Paige the ball is on a string and he really sees the floor well, and is capable shooting the ball. He isn't explosively quick and needs strength, but no doubt he is a premier player in the country." ~ Scout.com.  There is one word to describe Paige - WINNER (all caps).  That is all you need to know.  He is an extension of the coach on the floor and has the "it" factor,  just getting it done.  Damn glad he is the next point guard at Carolina!

J.P. Tokoto
Menomonee Falls (Wisc.) HS
6-6, 185, WF
Scout: #17 WF; #65 Overall
ESPN: #5 WF; #37 Overall

"Tokoto is a high motor athlete who can really play above the rim. His ability around the tin is as advanced as any in the class. Also he is always bringing it and rebounds well off the wing. He does need to improve his outside shot, and also creating off the dribble at times can be a problem for him." ~ Scout.com.  Tokoto has been working hard on his handle as well as his midrange game and it showed during this summer's AAU circuit.  He will walk on to campus ready to contribute on the defensive end as well as on the glass.  If he continues to develop his game instead of just over athletisizing (is that a word?) defenders, he could be a very special player, but he has a long way to go to be considered a threat with his midrange game at this point.

The Offers:
(alphabetically)

Rosco Allen
Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman
6-8, 200,WF/PF
Scout: #15 PF; #76 Overall
ESPN: #24 SF; #77 Overall

We need some big guys and I honestly don't know if Allen is the kind of big we need.  His style of play is better suited for the dook system.  His offer is a bit of a head scratchers to me, but "In Roy I Trust."

Brice Johnson
Cordova (S.C.) Edisto
6-9, 185, PF
Scout: #16 PF; #81 Overall
ESPN: #15 PF; #66 Overall

"He is long, athletic, and has a very nice touch in the mid-range. Also he blocks shots, and runs the floor very well. Now he does have to get stronger, but nearly every time out he was a force, and really put up big numbers. Once he gets stronger, Johnson could turn into one of the better long term prospects coming out of this class." - Brian Snow.  Johnson burst onto the scene this summer and all of his hard work has paid off with an offer.  I honestly don't know much about his game, so that is all I got.

Mitch McGary
Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster
6-10, 258, C
Scout: #4 C; #5 Overall
ESPN: #1 C; #4 Overall

"What makes him so special is that there is absolutely no pretty boy to him or sense of entitlement. McGary leads SYF in floor burns nearly every game, and combines that energy and desire to win with an unreal skill set -- you don’t see many people around 6-foot-10 and 250 pounds with the ability to put the ball on the floor and finish above the rim like him." - Brian Snow.  There are two recruits that I absolutely want that are not committed and McGary is one of them!  People that watch him play can't help but compare him to Pyscho T.  Thats right!  Tyler Hansbrough!  If you are a Tar Heel and you are talking about basketball and you are willing to compare someone to Tyler Hansbrough, you can't give someone a bigger compliment.  McGary is a combination of Hansbrough and Lamar Odom.  All out effort on every play (Hansbrough), but with nice handle that can take it coast to coast leading the break with a smooth jumper (Lamar Odom).  Did I mention that I really, really want to see this guy in Tar Heel Blue?  Oh yeah, he and his father are developing a nice relationship with Marcus Paige and his father.  Doesn't mean anything because he is going to make the choice that is best for him, but it can't hurt either.

Marcus Smart
Flower Mound (Texas)
6-4, 200, WG
Scout: #5 WG; #21 Overall
ESPN: #7 SF; #40 Overall

"Among the toughest dudes in high school basketball, Smart does a little bit of everything from scoring, defending to rebounding. Smart isn't super explosive as an athlete, but he gets to the rim at will with his strength and just always wins. His shot is getting better, and now must be respected. More so than anything Smart is simply a winner." - Brian Snow.  This is the second guy that I absolutely want.  The best way to describe Smart's game is gritty.  On every great team, there is that guy that does all the things that don't make headlines but are necessary to win and it is never the star player.  Well, almost never.  Smart gets it done.  Like Charlie Sheen would say - Winning!

Kaleb Tarczewski
Southborough (Mass.) St. Marks
7-0, 220, C
Scout: #5 C; #6 Overall
ESPN: #4 C; #9 Overall

Unless something dramatic happens, Tarc will most likely end up at Kansas.  It is not 100% but it is not looking good for the Heels.

T.J. Warren
Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster
6-8, 195, SF
Scout: #8 SF; #39 Overall
ESPN: #6 SF; #39 Overall

"The class of 2012 has a handful of guys that can flat out fill it up, but Warren is pushing them for the top at the pure scoring category. A 6-foot-8 wing with a thick strong body, Warren can really shoot it from deep and knows how to create for himself despite not being a superior athlete for the position." - Evan Daniels.  Despite being a Durham native, I don't know much about Warren.  Warren had been playing at Word of God in Raleigh, which essentially eliminates a player from being recruited by UNC.  However, he has transferred to Wolfeboro Brewster and now he has an offer.  Unfortunately, I don't know much about him because I never payed attention because he played at Word of God.

Players to Watch

Robert Carter
Thomasville (Ga.)  HS
6-9, 245, C
Scout: #7 C; #17 Overall
ESPN: #4 C; #14 Overall

Joel James
Palm Beach (Fla.) Dwyer
6-10, 280, C
Scout: #14 C; #49 Overall
ESPN: #10 C; #36 Overall

If anyone on this list gets an offer, I really hope it is Joel James.  He is a raw prospect that had conditioning problems, but he is really putting in work and sculpting his body.  The biggest fear is that he will not be able to get up and down the court in Roy's offense.  This is a legitimate fear.  However, with the work ethic that James has demonstrated, I think he is worth the chance.  I have been extremely impressed with James since I started following his recruitment and development.

Tony Parker
Lithonia (Ga.) Miller Grove
6-8, 255, C
Scout: #8 C; #18 Overall
ESPN: #8; #25 Overall

Adam Woodberry
Sioux City (Iowa) East
6-11, 220, C
Scout: #13 C; #44 Overall
ESPN: N/A
